After a standoff that lasted several hours Friday, police took Jose Varela, a cartoonist who had worked at El Nuevo Herald, into custody, after he had barricaded himself in a sixth floor office at the Miami building where both El Nuevo Herald and the Miami Herald are published. Varela was unhappy with the executive editor of El Nuevo Herald, who was not in the building at the time. Varela was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, although the weapon he used was a toy.
