the writing quality of bar exam essays

Well, you know something's up when the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar e-mails all of the people preparing to take the July bar exam to tell them:

Images"Quality of writing counts.  Answers written in a form other than paragraphed essay form will not receive full credit.  Excessive use of abbreviations, such as symbols, acronyms and text-talk may result in a score reduction."
