Judge Ruggero J. Aldisert is one of the persons recognized by the Legal Writing Institute with its prestigious Golden Pen Award. He is Chief Judge Emeritus and Senior U.S. Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Fifteen or more years ago, Judge Aldisert
wrote a book called Opinion Writing. We learned from the blog Legal Research Plus
that the book was never sold but was printed as a public relations gesture by West and copies given to all federal judges and to judges in the state supreme and appellate courts. But when Thomson bought West, it stopped the practice of giving a new copy to every judge. (They probably would have thought differently about that decision to stop giving judges a copy of the book if they would have known that the legal writing and research blogs would disclose that secret.)
You can also visit the website for the book by clicking here
. It is a book to recommend not only to judges but to students who are law clerks (or about to enter into the annual competition for law clerk positions -- imagine how much stronger their interviews will be if they read this book in advance!). (mew)
