"The 'New Bottom Line' as proposed by the Tikkun Community and the Network of Spiritual Progressives: Institutions, social practices, corporations, legislation, government activities, etc. should be judged efficient, rational, and productive not only to the extent that they maximize money and power, but also to the extent that they maximize love, caring, generosity, kindness, ethical and ecological sensitivity, and enhance our capacities to respond to the universe with awe and wonder at the grandeur of creation. Imagine how different the practice and theory of law could be if this New Bottom Line prevailed in our society.
"We are continuing a series of monthly national conference calls to discuss a New Bottom Line in the professions, each of which will focus on the particular professions of the participants. The next such call, which will discuss a New Bottom Line in the Legal Professions, will take place Tuesday, July 18, 8 pm Eastern Standard Time (5:00 pm Pacific Time). On this call, Rhonda V. Magee, Professor of Law at the University of San Francisco, will lead us in a discussion based on her work on various ways law might be interpreted to bring it more in line with a spiritual perspective. She is currently looking at areas such as Constitutional law, Torts, and immigration with the aim of suggesting substantive law changes that would better support a spiritually grounded understanding of humanity.
"For information on how to join the call, as well as materials to read ahead of time, email email@example.com. If you miss the call, but want to be involved in future calls, send an email telling us so. And spread the word to other legal professionals--many of us have friends who have felt frustrated or even alienated in the legal work that they do, because as much good as they do, they are nevertheless stuck in a system that is to some degree about money and power rather than justice. So tell them about this, ask them to read the articles, and then to contact us:
"Right now, we are gathering interested participants for calls to discuss a New Bottom Line in other professions, including psychology, education for grade and high school, education for college & grad/professional schools, publishing, media, and investment/financial planning. If you are interested in facilitating or participating in any of these calls, or in another area that we have not mentioned, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your profession, tell us about you and your life situation and work situation, and, if you can facilitate such a conference call in your own area of work, a brief sentence about your qualifications. We will be sending out another email in the coming weeks to inform you about the date and time for those calls.
