Words and expressions to banish from your vocabulary in 2014

The list is from a New York Times Op-Ed by Timothy Egan, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and National Book Award author.  Please feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments below.

Words for the Dumpster

  • "Twerking"
  • "Stay classy"
  • Artisan
  • Brand
  • Gluten-free (ha!)
  • Whatever
  • 24/7
  • "End of the day"
  • "World class"
  • "Best practices"

And Mr. Egan agrees with others who complain that the expression "literally" has become "the most overused of phony emphasis words" and should be dropped forthwith.

Don't forget our friends at Lake Superior State University, who publish their annual list of words to be banished for misuse, overuse, or just plain uselessness. The new list is at www.lssu.edu/banished/current.php The complete list of hundreds of banished words is at www.lssu.edu/banished/complete_list.php
