In these difficult economic times, you can find lots of information on how to get a job. Yet, many lawyers have also lost their jobs, and there is little information on how to deal with that crisis. Over at Attorney at Work, Wendy Werner offers some practical advice in her article, “Preparing for the Axe to Fall.” Here are the steps she suggests for someone anticipating the loss of a job.
1, Know your rights. Review your employment contract and various firm policies.
2. Resist any temptation to operate on yourself. In other words, consult an employment lawyer.
3. Control the message. Develop a way to talk about about your situation to the public and to potential employers.
4. Make a graceful exit. This includes retaining your personal files and professional contacts list at home.
