"An Uncontrolled Addiction"

The Rhode Island Supreme Court has imposed an 18-month retroactive suspension of an attorney admitted to practice in 2009.

The misconduct involved his representation of clients without his firm's knowledge while employed as a law firm associate. The firm learned of the issue after he had voluntarily departed for other employment.

The attorney had taken prescribed drugs for pain and

what began as controlled maintenance of his condition devolved into an uncontrolled addiction to drugs. [He] began purchasing narcotics from illegal sources, and his need for drugs consumed both his income and his judgment. He began misappropriating funds from the firm to fund his drug purchases.

The bar complaint led to immediate steps to effectively deal with the addiction, full restitution and cessation of law practice. He remains drug free.

The suspension was imposed retroactively to September 2012. He may apply for reinstatement 18 months from then. (Mike Frisch)
