Opening: Associate Dean for Library and Information Services, Valparaiso Law
Valparaiso University Law School invites applicants for the position of Associate Dean for Library and Information Services. This is a tenure or tenure eligible faculty position, reporting directly to the Vice Dean of the Law School, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2012.
The Associate Dean will be responsible for elevating the role of the library by providing vision and leadership, and by bringing an entrepreneurial approach to the development of library and information services.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan, in conjunction with the Vice Dean, for ensuring that information resources and library services support and enhance the mission of the Law School
- Establishing, implementing, and regularly assessing an operating plan for library and information services.
- Coordinating information services to support the teaching, scholarship, and service goals of the Law School
- Overseeing all aspects of library operation including administration of the library strategic plan, personnel management of library staff, collection development, budget management, and implementation of technology to support library services Providing leadership in a collegial environment
- Collaborating with the Dean for Library Services of Valparaiso University and other members of the community of library and information technology professionals.
- Coordinating the legal research curriculum of the law school and participating in teaching legal research
Qualifications for this position:
- M.L.S. degree from an ALA accredited library school or other advanced degree. J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategy 5 years of relevant work experience 3 years of supervisory experience in a law library
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills Understanding of existing and emerging technologies
- Active involvement in professional organizations such as American Association of Law Libraries, CALI, AALS and ABA

Members of Tarlton’s reference staff engage in a wide variety of activities that support the research and instructional activities of the Law School’s faculty and students. Librarians work closely with faculty members and student journals through Tarlton’s liaison program, providing in-depth research support, bibliographic assistance and instructional programs. All reference librarians are expected to teach for-credit advanced legal research in the law school, in addition to providing library-sponsored courses, tours and presentations. Tarlton’s librarians are expected to participate in continuing professional development activities and are encouraged to engage in professional scholarship. Opportunities exist for developing a specialty in the legal information sub-field of the candidate’s choosing. This position may include responsibility for social media outreach and the marketing of library events, collection development duties, and/or the development of online services and resources.
Qualifications: A Master's degree in Library or Information Science (MLS or equivalent degree) from an accredited program and a JD from an ABA-accredited law school are required. Knowledge of legal research techniques, sources, and formats is required. Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a professional, team-based environment as well as independently. Teaching experience is preferred. One to three years of professional experience in an academic law library is preferred. Today, membership libraries are crucial parts of the legal information community and NYLI is undertaking major initiatives to meet 21st century demands for just in time access to legal and business information.
The New York Law Institute is partnering with Axelroth & Associates to recruit for a Manager, Information Systems. This critical management position was created a few years ago to develop and administer systems to connect members with the Institute’s resources, services and products. The person selected will have responsibility for two key areas: 1) technology supporting the delivery of resources and member services and 2) technical services systems supporting internal operations.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with the Executive Director to identify opportunities for developing and enhancing the technologies critical to NYLI’s success. Harris County Law Library: The Director of the Harris County Law Library is responsible for the administration of the Harris County Law Library which is located at 1019 Congress in downtown Houston, Texas. It serves the judges, attorneys, and litigants of Harris County, Texas. Harris County is the third largest county in the United States. The Law Library has a current staff of eight, and a current annual budget of about $1.5 million. It is a division of the Harris County Attorney’s Office, which provides general oversight and interaction with other county departments including the Budget Office and Commissioners Court. The Director is a practice group level manager in the Office of the County Attorney, participates in County Attorney manager meetings, and reports to the Chief of Staff for the County Attorney.
Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing the overall operation of the Harris County Law Library, long-range strategic planning, budget development and implementation, acquisition of legal subscriptions and new technologies, supervision of the library staff, and management of the day-to-day operations of the Law Library.The Director will be expected to:Develop and facilitate relationships between relevant stakeholders, including government officials, other law libraries, and local bar associations; Maintain a modern, high quality library that serves both lawyers and non-lawyers with a proper balance between electronic and non-electronic resources; Publicize and promote the Law Library; Oversee training programs for the public, including lawyers and non-lawyers.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications include: An MLS and J.D. from accredited programs; five (5) or more years of academic law library experience, including three years of progressively responsible administrative experience; experience in library technical and bibliographic services, significant experience working collaboratively with technical services staff on related Public and Technical Services issues, or a relevant combination of experience and skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, and to maintain positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff and other users of the law library; experience with Library 2.0 and/or information technology in addition to knowledge of LEXIS, WESTLAW, Innovative, OCLC, and other related systems; experience supervising professional librarians and support staff; collection development experience; and evidence of professional activity at a local and national level.

Opening: Two PT Research Assistants for the Digital Public Library of America planning initiative (Paid Internship Opportunity), Cambridge, MA
Are you a student interested in helping to launch a large-scale digital public library in the United States? Excited about the future of online access to information? Want to collaborate closely with innovative partners in public and research libraries, government, publishing, and elsewhere?
The Berkman Center seeks two part-time Research Assistants for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) planning initiative. The DPLA planning initiative is bringing together representatives from public and research libraries, the educational community, cultural organizations, state and local government, publishers, authors, and private industry in a series of meetings and workshops to examine strategies for improving public access to comprehensive online resources. More information about the initiative can be found here. These positions are ideal for students who are looking to learn more about, and contribute to, these efforts.
Position Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will be to support the DPLA Secretariat, which includes staying abreast of developments in the digital library field (including news related to e-publishing, copyright, linked open data, and other areas), blogging regularly on these issues, writing weekly round-ups of the DPLA public listserv, and contributing to the DPLA wiki and forthcoming website. The RAs will also assist with preparations for the DPLA plenary meeting in October and occasional workshops, including opportunities to create related multimedia. This position represents an ideal opportunity for those interested in digital humanities, intellectual property issues, and access to knowledge and information.
Required Education, Experience and Skills:
- Advanced writing and editing skills, with the ability to quickly draft and contextualize written materials within the suite of the project outputs;
- Excellent critical reading comprehension, with the ability to absorb material quickly;
- Attention to detail;
- Strong knowledge of basic HTML;
- Familiarity with common social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube;

- Consults with other key personnel on electronic, Web 2.0 tools, and other media based resources.
- Provides reference assistance at the library’s reference desk, including some evenings and weekends.
- Assists in setting institutional policy for use of information services for faculty, staff, and students. Investigates, recommends, and assists the Associate Director in the development of new patron and information technology services.
- Is strongly committed to engaging in continuing professional development.

Qualifications, Required:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school; J.D. from an ABA- accredited law school
- A minimum of two to three years of progressively responsible experience in at least two of the following areas: management, reference, or electronic resources management; academic law library experience highly desired. This experience should include serving in a supervisory capacity in public services administration.

About the Law School. Although the Law Library is administered as part of the Law School, the Library staff works collaboratively with the University Libraries in areas of mutual interest.
Qualifications. Applicants must hold both a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program. Applicants should have at least five years of management experience in a law library, including the development of a library collection, the organization of legal information resources, and the supervision of library personnel. Applicants should have an understanding of the rapidly evolving information environment and a record of active engagement in scholarship and professional activities. Teaching experience in a law school environment is also desirable, since the Director will be expected to teach courses and to coordinate the Library’s resources and programs with the School’s innovative curriculum.

Position Description.
- Reporting to the Associate Law Librarian for Reference and Instructional Services, the Head of Reference Services at the Lillian Goldman Law Library is responsible for coordinating and participating in the work and service of the Anglo-American and foreign and international reference librarians in a dynamic and challenging environment.
- Works closely with the Head of Instruction to coordinate reference, instruction, and other activities. Provides reference, teaches in the legal research classes, and participates in collection development. In addition, the Head of Reference Services will have some interest and/or experience in foreign and international law reference and instruction.
- The Law Library serves the faculty and students of a research-oriented law school with a strong tradition of interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as other researchers from larger scholarly and legal communities.
Responsibilities.
- Coordinates the reference desk schedule and other core reference activities. Teaches in the formalized legal research classes, as well as in a variety of classroom settings. Coordinates and provides additional legal research instruction in various forums; provides reference and research support. Qualifications.

Statutory Position (28 U.S.C. §674): The Librarian manages the Supreme Court Library, its 27 employees and a collection of more than 500,000 volumes. Technical Services Librarian. Working in a team environment the Technical Services Librarian will work closely with the Technical Services Team Leader and the Electronic Services Librarian with responsibility in cataloging materials in all formats as well as assisting with the serials collection and electronic resources, and participation in public services, including reference assistance as assigned and serving on working teams within the library structure.
Responsibilities. The Technical Services Librarian will coordinate ordering, payment, receipt, and holdings maintenance of serials in all formats, including managing the access, maintenance, and preservation of serials collection in print and electronic formats, overseeing binding activities, routing activities, and the Journal Exchange Program. This includes working with vendors and subscription agents, making sure that all materials are available to the Legal Information Center cliental.
