Opening: Technical Services Librarian, Charlotte School of Law
Charlotte School of Law (CharlotteLaw) seeks applications for an experienced Technical Services Librarian.
The school is a member of The InfiLaw System, a consortium of independent law schools committed to making legal education more responsive to the realities of new career dynamics. Its mission is to establish student-centered, American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law schools in underserved markets that graduate students with practice-ready skills, and achieve true diversity programs aimed at student academic and career success.
The Technical Services Librarian is primarily responsible for original and copy cataloging, classification of information in all formats, authority work, and setting up the work flow for cataloging and processing of new materials. The activities of the Technical Services Librarian will include cross training in acquisitions ordering, serials and serials check-in and claiming. The Technical Services Librarian participates in the collegial process of developing library policy and systems affecting all general aspects of library service.
The Technical Services Librarian reports to the Assistant Director for Technical Services.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Complete original and copy cataloging and classification of current and retrospective materials, including books, periodicals, microforms, software, recordings and videocassettes, according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress classification schedules, authority control procedures.
- Cross training in all areas of serials management and acquisitions systems.
- In consultation with the Assistant Director for Technical Services, produce training and implementation manuals and documents for technical services policies and systems
- In consultation with the Assistant Director for Technical Services, identify and report problems relating to the Innovative Millennium integrated library computer system.
- Provide reference assistance at the library’s reference desk, including some evenings and weekends.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualitfications:
Required:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; a minimum of one year of related experience required. This experience should include serving in a technical services area; strong oral and written communications skills; the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines; commitment to enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to clients; flexibility and enthusiasm for starting a new library; customer service orientation and experience.
Preferred:
Relevant academic law library experience; experience in original cataloging; extensive experience with the Innovative Millennium integrated library computer systems.

Candidates will be required to have a Master's degree in library/information science from an accredited program. Knowledge of traditional legal bibliography as well as electronic legal information resources. Demonstrated knowledge of file formats, media/data migration, metadata, database management, and digitization techniques. Experience in a library's cataloging area with substantial knowledge of cataloging and classification policies, practice and tools such as OCLC and Innovative's Millennium.
Preferred qualifications would include an ABA accredited JD degree, or international equivalent. Knowledge of electronic and traditional cataloging standards and emerging cataloging standards, such as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. Experience with relevant thesauri and one or more metadata schemas or tools. The skill of coordinating projects with minimal guidance. Showing initiative and being self-motivated, while having a strong customer service orientation, is of the highest importance.

Southern Methodist University’s Underwood Law Library is seeking candidates for its Associate Director for Public Services position.

Opening: Electronic Resources Librarian, Notre Dame Law Library
The Kresge Library of the Notre Dame Law School is seeking a talented librarian to help us establish a new position and then to be its founding occupant. We are looking for someone who understands electronic resources and is adept at making them useful to library patrons. We are looking for an independent thinker with a cooperative outlook, a flexible and creative person who will help the library establish goals, methods, and structures that will make our electronic resources available to our users in the most sensible fashion while helping to ensure that the library's investment in electronic resources is responsibly maintained.
The Kresge Library is an integral part of the Notre Dame Law School and offers exceptional opportunities for developing professional skills and contributing to the educational mission of the Law School. The successful candidate will be a member of an experienced faculty of 10 librarians and part of the regular faculty of the Law School.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate for the Electronic Resources Library position will be an intelligent, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual with an M.L.S. or M.I.S. from an ALA-accredited school. A demonstrated ability to work with online resources in a complex environment is a necessary attribute. We also seek someone with the ability to supervise others with attention and compassion, and with the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students and staff, individually and in group settings. Duties:
The Electronic Resources Librarian position is a work in progress, and one of the chief duties of the successful candidate will be to assist in the proper shaping of the position. There are several areas of responsibility which are anticipated to be overseen by the position: the coordination of all activities associated with the management of electronic resources, including oversight of an Electronic Resource Management system, updating and maintaining links, coordination of content on an electronic resources web page, and work with the cataloging phase of electronic resources. The Electronic Resources Librarian will supervise two staff members, one a newly defined position of Electronic Resources Assistant, and the other the Technology Support Assistant/Systems Coordinator, who in turn oversees our Innovative Interfaces Millennium ILS. We anticipate that the ERL will coordinate technology issues with the law school's Technology Services (IT) Department, manage technical problems with electronic resources vendors, coordinate vendor relation issues, licensing, etc., with the Collection Development Librarian, and participate in the instruction of electronic resources users. The Electronic Resources Librarian will share in the management of the Technical Services Department working in close collaboration with the Head of the Department, the Collection Development Librarian, and the Bibliographic Control/Database Maintenance Librarian.
Environment:
The Kresge Library supports a national law school serving approximately 580 students and 35 full-time faculty. The experienced staff of 27 includes ten professionals. As members of the Law School faculty, librarians are welcome participants on Law School and University committees. Construction of a new Notre Dame Law School building began in the summer of 2007; a major renovation of the Kresge Library will follow in 2009. The College of Law seeks a well-qualified law librarian to work under the direction of its Director of the Law Library to build a research-caliber law school library. This position seeks an experienced librarian to grow a young law collection of print and electronic resources, and the systems, procedures, and staff needed to support it. Florida International University is a diverse, public research university serving 35,000 students. Its College of Law was unanimously established by the Florida Legislature in the Spring of 2000. The College of Law enrolled its inaugural class in the Fall of 2002 and offers full and part-time programs leading to the J.D. Degree. The College of Law is fully accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
Catalog & Bibliographic Control Librarian:
The Catalog & Bibliographic Control Librarian will be responsible for all aspects of the law library's technical services, except for acquisitions and serials, needed to support and provide access to the library's print and electronic information resources. This librarian will be working most closely with the Serials and Acquisitions Librarian in supervising the technical services department. Responsibilities include original and copy cataloging, classification of information in all formats, authority work, cataloging and processing of new materials, review of departmental policies and procedures, use of the FlU University Libraries' integrated library system (ALEPH), and working with University Libraries and Information Technology personnel to coordinate law library operations and procedures with the University's operations. The Catalog and Bibliographic Control Librarian will supervise paraprofessional and student staff assistants working on technical services tasks. In addition, the Catalog and Bibliographic Control Librarian takes the lead role in the upkeep and maintenance of the Library’s archives. The state university libraries recently completed their migration to Ex-Libris’ ALEPH system including a recent upgrade to version 18. The Catalog and Bibliographic Control Librarian will play a major role in continued ALEPH upgrades, possible future migrations and in coordinating implementation or maintenance of future products. The Catalog and Bibliographic Control Librarian has a central role in ensuring patron access to electronic information, including providing catalog and website links to web based information sources and remote access issues. This librarian will compile and maintain statistics, including the important statistical reports required for accreditation and state reporting purposes. The Catalog and Bibliographic Control Librarian may be asked to provide some reference duties when the library is open to patrons.

The Rutgers University Library for the Center for Law and Justice, in Newark, N.J., is seeking a Research Services Librarian. The Library for the Center for Law and Justice is a research library with a collection of over 500,000 volumes and volume-equivalents, and a staff of nineteen, including eight librarians with faculty status.
Responsibilities:
The Research Services Librarian has primary responsibility for development and implementation of services that support teaching and research. Specific duties include: training faculty members and research assistants in database use and research methods; providing guest lectures on research methods for law school classes; managing faculty document delivery; developing services to student publications; developing marketing and outreach initiatives to educate faculty and students about library services; teaching advanced legal research course sessions; writing research guides; participating in reference duty and the faculty liaison program; and maintaining an archive and bibliography of faculty publications. Reference duty includes evening and weekend work by rotation. The Research Services Librarian coordinates activities with other reference librarians and the Digital Services Librarian. The Research Services Librarian reports to the Director of the Law Library.
Conditions of employment:
This is a full-time, calendar-year, tenure-track position available July 1, 2008. Initial appointment is
for one year at the rank of Librarian III (equivalent to Assistant Professor); reappointment and tenure decisions are based on librarianship, scholarship, and service. Rutgers is an EO/Affirmative Action employer.

The Pritzker Legal Research Center of Northwestern University School of Law solicits applications from highly motivated individuals for the position of Research and Instructional Services Librarian. The successful applicant will join an energetic and experienced reference department that provides the highest level of reference assistance, research instruction, and support to meet the multifaceted information needs of faculty and students. We seek someone who is creative, flexible, capable of working in a dynamic environment, and committed to excellence.
The successful applicant will participate with other reference librarians in assisting faculty through our active liaison program; developing instructional materials, handouts, and research guides (including web-based materials); teaching research in the first-year program and a variety of advanced legal research courses; developing and offering informal research instruction sessions for faculty and students; providing reference assistance to a faculty and student body with increasingly interdisciplinary research interests; assisting in other public services activities; and working on team-based projects with other members of the Pritzker Legal Research Center. Participation in professional development activities is encouraged and supported. Some evening/weekend work may be required.
Required Qualifications: M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited institution coupled with a strong service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively in a collaborative environment. Substantial progress toward completion of the M.L.S. degree with law library reference experience may substitute. Applicants must have an excellent knowledge of print and electronic legal resources as well as successful teaching or training experience or a demonstrated aptitude for and interest in teaching. Must be self-directed, able to meet deadlines, and committed to providing the highest level of responsive and innovative service to a demanding patron base in a variety of settings. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
Preferred Qualifications: J.D. from an A.B.A.-accredited law school. One to three years law library experience. Familiarity with social science and business research resources. Experience with course management systems (CMS), such as Blackboard; experience or interest in educational technologies, and ability to support faculty and students using such systems.

DUTIES: Under general guidance of the Director, performs professional-level assistance to library users with an emphasis in the areas of collection management, public service and reference. Typical duties include but are not limited to:
- Accounting: Accepts payment and accounts for monies in accordance with court policies. Reconciles monthly expenditures and revenue against financial management system.
- Circulation: Uses library’s automated circulation system to check out materials to eligible borrowers within the guidelines of the circulation policy.
- Collection Management: Manages relationships with library vendors including ordering new and replacement materials, canceling subscriptions, and resolving billing and subscription problems. Works with state entities and library vendors to manage acquisition and distribution of primary Utah legal materials to judges and court staff statewide.
- Document Delivery: Fills requests for library materials following established policies.
- Equipment Maintenance: Performs minor computer, photocopy and microform equipment maintenance and repair by cleaning, troubleshooting, changing toner, clearing paper jams, filling paper trays.
- Professional Development: Participates in state, regional and national professional library associations and activities. Attends professional meetings and workshops. Limited institutional funding for travel is available. Monitors professional literature and electronic discussion groups related to library, access to justice, self-represented litigant and legal fields. Serves as law library representative on court committees as requested.
- Public Service: Provides library tours. Creates and updates library brochures and research guides. Develops and teaches classes for judges, law clerks, court staff and the public on a variety of topics including legal research and court procedure. Writes occasional articles for the court newsletter, state bar journal and other publications. Promotes library services to all user groups, including judges, court staff, state government employees, attorneys, the public and public libraries.
- Reference: Provides professional-level reference assistance to a wide range of library users using appropriate print and electronic resources.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution and some law library experience, or JD from an ABA-accredited institution and one year law library experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Must have a working knowledge of library systems and procedures, library reference and technical services functions, and considerable knowledge of legal reference materials and terminology. Requires a working knowledge of Lexis and/or Westlaw and automated library systems. Needs excellent customer service skills, the ability to apply principles and techniques of the work described, and have initiative, resourcefulness, judgment and tact. Must also have basic accounting experience, ability to speak and write clearly and effectively, and have strong customer service skills. Must have the ability to multi-task effectively and be detail-oriented, have excellent problem-solving ability, ability to follow policies and procedures, and maintain a positive attitude. Strong computer skills and experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.

Opening: Acquisitions and Serials Librarian, Gould Law Library
Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Acquisitions and Serials Librarian is responsible for acquiring all library materials in varying formats and ensuring the upkeep of serials titles. Acquisitions duties include purchasing, negotiating with electronic resource vendors, ensuring timely payment for purchases, and producing collection development related statistics and reports. Serials duties include ordering of new titles, updating of serials records, and supporting the work of our serials assistants. The librarian must have excellent written and oral communication skills and must be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with the library and Law Center staff and faculty as well as vendors. Other responsibilities include occasional cataloging of monographs and electronic resources, assisting in the training and supervision of Technical Services staff, and planning and participating in library projects. The Acquisitions and Serials Librarian is expected to participate in professional development opportunities, formal and informal, to keep current with developments in acquisitions, serials, technical services, library automation and law libraries, and legal research and legal systems of the world, by reading relevant professional literature and attending local and national meetings and continuing education programs.
Qualifications:
Required: MLS from an ALA accredited program; experience with OCLC and integrated library systems; understanding of AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, and MARC, Proficiency in the use of standard PC applications; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong service orientation; and the ability to work well both with others and independently.
Preferred: Experience with Innovative Interfaces; familiarity with legal materials.

- Provides reference services, research assistance and library instruction to all users of the library. Teaches in the mandatory Legal Research and Writing Program for first year law students and may teach in the Advanced Legal Research class for upper level law students. Serves as a faculty liaison. Participates in collection development activities. May supervise and train student assistants.
Essential Functions
- Provides reference services to all library users and research services to law faculty.
- Serves as a faculty liaison to approximately a dozen law faculty members, determining special needs or areas of interest and assisting the faculty to more effectively utilize their research assistants. Develops faculty interest profiles, apprises faculty of current information services, creates selected annotate bibliographies and other special projects for faculty members. Develop and deliver specialized research lectures for assigned faculty's classes.
- Teaches in mandatory Legal Research and Writing Program for first year law students, including training in Lexis, Westlaw and the internet. Prepares and grades legal research exercises. May assist in teaching Advanced Legal Research. Teaches specialized topical research seminars.
- Participates as a member of the collection development team, recommending and evaluating legal resources in all formats and subject areas.
- May assist in the hiring, training and supervision of student reference assistants.
- Prepares exhibits, bibliographies and research guides.
- May have responsibility for one or more legal subject areas such as foreign, international and comparative law, interlibrary loan, or government documents. This would include making collection development recommendations for the subject area.
- Maintains own current awareness by reading the professional literature and appropriate on-line sources.
- Serves the law library profession by participating at the local, regional, and/or national level in professional associations, attending or delivering presentation at professionals conferences and continuing education programs, or publishing articles, chapters of books, etc. that add to the body of law or library literature.
- Participates in departmental and staff meetings and activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Assoc. Director for Research & Instruction or Law Library Director/Assoc. Dean of IS.
Education/Experience Law degree (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school, or the foreign equivalent required. Master's Degree in Library/Information Science [MLS/MLIS] from an ALA accredited program or equivalent required. Academic law library work experience and teaching experience strongly preferred. Subject expertise in one of the below mentioned areas preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability
- Demonstrated knowledge of research and reference materials in law.
- Proficiency in the use of electronic databases and web-based information delivery.

The University of Illinois College of Law invites applications for the position of Reference Librarian, a full-time academic, tenure-track faculty appointment with the rank of Assistant Professor of Library Administration. This position reports to the Head of Public Services of the Law Library in the College of Law.
The Reference Librarian assists the Head of Public Services in developing exceptional and innovative services to the College of Law faculty. Additional responsibilities include active participation in the public services team, regular provision of reference services including some evenings and weekends; teaching one section of the first-year legal research course, participation in other formal and informal legal research instruction to law students and others on campus; preparation of print and electronic research aids and collection guides; and mentoring of library science graduate assistants.
The Law Library serves a vibrant College of Law including approximately 45 full time faculty, 600 JD students, and 50 LLM students and also serves the legal information needs of a major research university. The Law Library offers its users a broad array of electronic information sources and a print collection in excess of 750,000 volumes including selective US and EU depository items. The Law Library staff currently consists of 10.5 professional librarians, seven support staff positions and four part-time, graduate assistants who are pursuing masters degrees in library science.
