Opening: Head of Collection Services, Univ. of Iowa Law Library

Employer Information: The University of Iowa Law Library is part of the University of Iowa Law School.  The University of Iowa Law School, founded in 1865, is the oldest Law School west of the Mississippi River and is located in Iowa City, Iowa.  The Law School has a student population of about 600 students in its JD program and about 15 in its LLM program, and has a faculty of about 45.  According to the most recent ABA figures, the Law Library collection of information resources contains the second largest number of separately cataloged on-site accessible different titles in all formats, and the second largest collection of volumes and microform volume equivalents, among all academic law libraries. The collection is very strong both in American Law and Foreign, Comparative, and International Law.  The Law Library has a staff of 32 FTE, including 8 Public Services librarians with both library and law degrees, and 5.5 librarians in Collection Services.

Responsibilities:  The Head of Collection Services manages and participates in the technical services function of the Law Library.  Collection Services consists of three departments that report to the Head of Collection Services: Collection Development, Continuing Collections, and Collection Access.  These departments are responsible for the acquisition, receipt, claiming and cataloging of all new and continuing materials that enter the collection, including our selective depository titles; for creating and maintaining the online catalog (ExLibris/OCLC); and for labeling, binding and preserving the collection.  This position directly supervises the three Department Managers and indirectly manages a Collection Services staff of 13 staff members.  This position also coordinates Collection Services workflows and activities, setting and revising policy as necessary, coordinates an acquisitions budget of about $3,000,000, and supervises the information resources selection activities of two Public Services Librarians.  The Head of Collection Services reports to the Executive Law Librarian who reports to the Associate Dean in charge of the Law Library. 

Qualifications and Experience:  The candidate should have an MLS degree; significant and successful academic law library technical services and supervisory experience; demonstrated leadership, communication, organizational, fiscal, and project management skills; excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to interact successfully with people and manage effectively a large staff; and demonstrated experience in working effectively in a diverse environment. 

Salary:  $80,000 - $85,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
