Thomson Reuters Expands Its Conquest of Latin American Legal Publishers
Watching Thomson Reuter's acquisitions of foreign legal publishers is like watching the war strategy game of Risk play out. Of late, TR Legal has taken its tried and true strategy of acquiring legal publishers to Latin America because there aren't any legal publishers left in North America to buy. In May 2010, TR accquired Revista dos Tribunais, one of Brazil's major legal publishing houses. On Jan. 19, 2011, it was announced that TR "conquered" in Risk-terminology, Argentina and Chile by acquiring Argentina- and Chile-based Legal Publishing Group. From the announcement:
Abeledo Perrot, one of the most prestigious Argentinean legal publishers, has more than 3,000 professional titles in its portfolio, as well as traditional legal magazines such as Jurisprudencia Argentina and the Depalma editorial house. In Chile, Legal Publishing Group has a long history of developing and publishing high-quality content in legal, regulatory, tax, labor and foreign trade matters. The business serves the needs of more than 90 universities and offers tailored online solutions to more than 200 governmental departments. Their main products include legal magazine Gaceta Juridica, software Hyper Renta and their line of Manuales de Consulta.
