More Publishers Balk at Amazon Pricing for e-Books
Amazon's problems with publishers over e-book pricing continues with Hachette joining HarperCollins and Macmillan position that the $9.99 pricing model promoted by Amazon doesn't value digital books properly. As Amazon gave into Macmillan, though final terms are still in negotiation, the company will likely have no choice but to let publishers control pricing across the board. The number of stores and devices that can sell and access e-books has proliferated. Amazon simply does not have the leverage to define the market in light of that development. Amazon will have to open the Kindle to more functionality than reading books if it's going to compete against products that can display books and do much more. My question is whether Amazon anticipated this development or had a back-up plan if it did. [MG]February 5, 2010 in Current Affairs | Permalink
