Second Attempt for First Public Law School in Massachusetts

The ABA Journal is reporting that the Univ. of Massachusetts is considering Southern New England School of Law's offer to donate its campus and assets. If accepted and approved by the state Board of Higher Education, the University would be operating the first public law school in Massachusetts. Four years ago, the state Board of Education rejected a similar UMass plan for the 235-student law school which is not accredited by the ABA. According the the ABA Journal report the first plan "ignited bitter opposition from two private Boston law schools that are accredited by the ABA, the New England School of Law and Suffolk University Law School." The Boston Globe is reporting that State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill believes the State cannot afford a public law school. Governor Deval Patrick declined to say whether he approves of the plan. Wait 'n see. [JH]
