User 927, a Play Inspired by a Real-Life Online Search Log

User 927 opened on June 6th at the St. Stephen's Theatre in Philadelphia. CNN claims it is the world's first play based on a search log and it probably is but I wouldn't put it past some LIS students to have created skits on the "you are what you search" theme. In this instance, the play, written by Katharine Clark Gray,  was inspired by AOL's inadvertent disclosure of 3 million search engine queries by 650,000 of its users including User 927's search log.  {JH}

Brat Productions,a theater company in Philadelphia, found one such search string more than compelling enough to form the basis of its new play, User 927.
The show which opened Wednesday and runs through June 22 is based on a now infamous real life search log that included queries ranging fro"purple lilac," "happy bunny pictures,"and"square dancing steps"to"cut into your trachea," "pee fetish,"and"Simpsons incest."And that's just for starters."It was something that captured my imagination and seemed to suggest some type of dramatic story that could come out of it a mystery or something about the Internet in general, and privacy," said User 927 director Michael Alltop.

Dear Joe:
Thanks so much for posting our info and video on your blog! To the best of our knowledge, we are indeed the first to produce a search query record-inspired dramatic work... but if anyone out there, LIS student or otherwise, has their own search-related play, skit, essay, poem, etc., we'd love to hear about it! www.bratproductions.org

Anyone interested in Search should also, ahem, *seek* out John Battelle's excellent book THE SEARCH, about the birth of Google and the evolution of the search engine from humble library tool to ubiquitous feature. www.battellemedia.com

Hey Joe: thanks for posting our info and YouTube video! To the best of our knowledge,we are indeed the first to dramatize a search query record, but if anyone else has a search play, or skit, or essay of their own we'd love to hear about it! www.bratproductions.org

Also, anyone interested in the topic should immediately, ahem, *seek* out John Battelle's THE SEARCH, a book on the birth of Google and how our amalgamated queries define who we are. (www.battellemedia.com) Mr. Battelle, whom I contacted about our show-- and who graciously posted my letter on his blog-- is indeed the master of his intellectual domain, and is worth a read.

Keep seeking,

Katie
