Alito Confirmation: Only One Question to Ask

In Judge Alito's Radical Views, an editorial published today, the New York Times suggests the following:

As senators prepare to vote on the nomination, they should ask themselves only one question: will replacing Sandra Day O'Connor with Judge Alito be a step forward for the nation, or a step backward?

Really, what's wrong with evaluating the SCOTUS nominee on the basis of his own qualifications? That's what the ABA did when it evaluated Alito well qualified.
