The vote tallies are in and the result is that the Irish voted to accept the European Union's new fiscal treaty. The vote was 60% in favor and 39% against, although voter turnout was only about 50%. Under the new treaty, EU states must advise the EU before issuing new debt and will face fines and other measures if they exceed deficit limits. The treaty will take effect when 12 of the 17 euro zone countries ratify it.
