UN Security Council Votes to Extend Mission in Afghanistan
Exercising its Chapter VII powers under the UN Charter, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted unanimously today to extend the authorization for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for one year. In taking this action, the UNSC stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen the Afghan security sector to ensure the observance of the rule of law throughout the country. The UNSC called on its Member States to provide necessary resources to the ISAF to ensure it can satisfy its operational requirements in the areas of personnel, equipment and other resources.
