From We Belong Together:
Gloria Steinem to Speak on Immigration Reform as Top Issue for Women’s Equality
Senator Mazie Hirono and impacted women will join Steinem to discuss the urgent need to pass comprehensive immigration reform
that treats women fairly and keeps families together
**Q&A with Gloria Steinem, Senator Hirono, Pramila Jayapal, Vivien Labaton and impacted women **
The day before she receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Gloria Steinem will speak on the evolution of the women’s movement and why feminists must be involved in the struggle for immigration reform on Tuesday, November 19th from 1PM to 3PM in the Murrow Room at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW in Washington, D.C.
Steinem will be joined by Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii -- the only immigrant Senator and a champion of the most women-friendly provisions of the Senate immigration bill – as well as We Belong Together co-chair and immigrant rights leader Pramila Jayapal, We Belong Together co-chair and third wave feminist leader Vivien Labaton, and impacted women from Barbados and Mexico, Barbara Young and Maria A. The women will participate in a panel to discuss the complex conditions women face today and what it means to approach immigration reform as an issue of women’s equality.
Steinem’s participation in this event constitutes the latest in a growing swell of women’s leadership in the pro-reform movement. Since January 2013, the We Belong Together campaign has engaged more than 10,000 women and girls across the country in taking action not only for comprehensive immigration reform, but also for reform that addresses the unique needs of women and children and keeps families together.
