Opal Tometi Named New BAJI Co-Director

From BAJI:
The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) is proud to announce that Opal Tometi has been appointed a Co-Director of the organization alongside Gerald Lenoir, the founding Executive Director. Opal Tometi has served as BAJI’s National Organizer for nearly 3 years and has played a critical role in coordinating the Black Immigration Network (BIN), a U.S.-based network of organizations and individuals connecting, training and building towards policy and cultural shifts for a racial justice and migrant rights agenda.
“Since coming to BAJI from Phoenix, Arizona, Opal has helped to increase BAJI’s capacity exponentially, adding to BAJI’s skillset, contributing to BAJI’s strategic vision and helping to inspire a social movement that brings to bear racial justice in immigrant rights work,” says Co-director Gerald Lenoir.
Opal has done an outstanding job of building the Black Immigration Network (BIN); initiating cross-cultural alliances, leading various types of trainings for immigrant-led and African American-led organizations; developing and supervising staff; organizing civic engagement and advocacy efforts as the national and local levels; and amplifying the voices of the movement for immigrant rights and racial justice through local and national media, including mainstream, alternative and ethnic media.
Since relocating from Phoenix to New York, NY in August 2012, Opal has been able to build a presence for BAJI and BIN in New York and Washington, DC and has established strategic relationships with important immigrant rights and racial justice organizations in those cities.
In addition to Opal’s appointment, BAJI is building a new national board to reflect the scope of its work.  The Co-directors, the rest of the BAJI staff and the new board will soon enter into a strategic planning process to plot BAJI’s role in the building of a social movement for racial equity, immigrant rights and economic justice over the next few years.
Welcome Opal Tometi into her new position by sending her an email at opal@blackalliance.org.
