Police Respond to Anti-Mexican Hate Crimes on Staten Island

Fortunately, police are taking the recent spate of attacks on Mexican immigrants in a Staten Island neighborhood most seriously. Unfortunatly, thjis is not an issolated incident as, acccording to FBI statistics, hate crimes against Latinos have been increasing over the last few years.  The hate killing of Luis Ramirez in rural Pennsylvania, as well as the beating death of Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, New York, are stark reminders of how dangerous this recent rise in hate can be.

Unfortunately, the rise in hate crimes appears correlated to the hateful speech directed at immigrants, especially those from Mexico, in the national dialogue over immigration.  If you doubt the depths of the emotions among many people on immigration generally, just look at the comments generated on any website news report on immigration.
