The Latest Nannygate?
Blog Emperor Paul Caron has the scoop on the latest potential Nannygate. The Senate Finance Committee this afternoon released thirty pages of documents relating to various adjustments to Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy F. Geithner's tax returns for 2001-2006. One of the principal issues is the immigration status of a housekeeper.
The L.A. Times reports that Geithner still has the support of President-Elect Obama and key senators after he explained that he had once employed an immigrant domestic worker with an expired work authorization.

At what point will be admit that at some point everyone has benefited from an out of status immigrant? Every time we go to the market, we buy produce that has been cultivated by undocumented workers. Are we in violation of the law, or aiding and abetting illegal workers when we put ketchup on our burgers, or super-size our fries? Do we ask to see papers and call e-verify whenever our gardener stops by with a new worker on his crew? Are we even home when they stop by? Should we start a neighborhood watch to monitor all domestic workers on our block?
This gotcha politics is absurd, even by our own standards, and that is saying something. Our economy is what it is. We have serious problems now, but nothing that would compare to what would happen to our economy without the undocumented millions picking our fruit, working in our restaurants and hotels, manufacturing our products, etc., etc., etc..
Why don't we just admit that they are here to stay, enable them to get right with the law by paying a penalty, filing and paying their back taxes, learning English and civics, and screen them to see if they are able to pass a background investigation. Let's maximize the full potential of our dwindling economy, or should I say, "Super-size" it.
