Massey: Economic Development in Mexico Would Address Migration Concerns
Douglas Massey, a noted demographer, reminds us of a fundamental economic truth in A Better Way to End Unauthorized Immigration:
"If the money devoted to U.S. border enforcement were instead channeled into structural adjustment in Mexico, as was done by the EU for Spain, unauthorized migration would likely disappear as a significant demographic and political issue in North America. This assertion is not a matter of ideological belief or airy theorizing; it is based on authoritative economic measurements and real-world experience."

Let's not forget that Bush has already promised $1.4 BILLION to Mexico under the "Merida Initiative" -- a program designed to stop gang violence in Mexico. So far, I don't see much improvement.
When we first proposed the idea, Bush said he would explain how American taxpayers' money should be spent and give some direction; after all, Mexico isn't doing that great of a job stopping the spread of gangs and drugs.
But how did the ungrateful President of Mexico react? Calderon said: "I cannot accept any submission or subordination...Give it to me. And give it to me without conditions!"
He then went on to say that that U.S. presidential candidates are "swaggering, macho, and anti-Mexican."
AND, he said that ALL Americans have "a total lack of understanding and aggravation, hostility toward Mexico."
So Bush gave him the money, no strings attached.
So no, no, no, Mr. Massey. We've given that corrupt, failed state of Mexico plenty of Americans' earnings.
It's time to invest in our own sovereignty.
