Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center has recently posted videos on that touch on immigrant detention.
Rule of Law and the U.S. Immigrant Detention System – This video was put together this summer by NIJC intern Kevin Koll and explains how the detention system violates key international human rights standards.
Videos from the Chicago screening of The Visitor and panel discussion on immigrant detention This collection of videos filmed in connection with a screening of the film The Visitor includes talks by: Junaid Afeef, interim director of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, who talks about death of immigrant detainee Hassiba Belbachir in an Illinois jail in 2005 and the work he and others have done to demand justice for her family. Rashed Binrashed, an NIJC client who was detained for more than two years in county jails in the Midwest due to bad legal advice he’d received when he first came to the U.S. as an asylum seeker and as the result of a traffic stop for a broken tail light. Colby Kingsbury, Rashed’s pro bono lawyer who helped win his freedom (and is still fighting his immigration case). NIJC’s own Tara Magner, who told the crowd about how they can get involved to advocate for reform of the detention system and shared her thoughts on the prospects for positive immigration reform in the next year.
