I took the train from New York City to Montreal to go to the Law and Society Conference this last May/June. There were, of course, immigration checks on each side of the border. Interestingly enough, at least in the car I was in, the Canadian immigration authorities were much more aggressive, ruder, and, at least to an outside viewer, seemed to be engaged in more of what would be called "racial profiling". This isn't to discount the issue at all or make excuses but just to draw attention to another aspect of the problem.
