Rest in Peace: Esequiel Hernandez, Jr.
On May 20, 1997, Esequiel Hernandez, Jr., an 18 year old U.S. citizen, (pictured left) was herding his family's goats 100 yards from his home on the US-Mexican border in Redford, Texas. Unknown to the residents of Redford, Marines were encamped just outside the small village along the Rio Grande River. After watering his goats in the river, Esequiel started on his way home when the Marines began following him from a distance of 200 yards. The four camouflaged Marines were outfitted with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment and weapons. Esequiel carried an antique .22 caliber rifle to keep wild dogs and rattlesnakes away from his goats. The autopsy showed that Esequiel was facing away from the Marines when he was shot and killed.
Esequel Hernandez Jr.'s tragic death act resulted from drug and border enforcement. For more information about Hernandez and his death, click here.

Although this is a tragedy that should never happened, the bloggers should be careful not to exploit this as a border enforcement issue, because you do not even come close to being even handed on this issue. Putting this single death in perspective, thousands of citizens die every day at the hands of illegal aliens because of the efforts of obstructionist efforts of immigration lawyers and our inability to control our borders. The tragedy of suffering citizen Americans is the collateral damage of your effort to leave our borders wide open.

"thousands of citizens die every day at the hands of illegal aliens"
Horace, when you say this you show yourself to be either stupid or dishonest (or both). In 2006 (the last year I can find statistics for) there were about 17,000 murders in the US. Most, of course, were done by citizens. But even if they were all done by illegal aliens this wouldn't even come close to "thousands... every day". (Some of those killed were non-citizens, too.) Even if we include accidental deaths [and of course there's no reason to think illegal aliens are more accident prone than anyone else so no reason to think keeping them out would lower the total number of deaths in the US], and assume the incredible, that _all_ were caused by illegal immigrants and that none would have otherwise happened, we would not get even close to "thousands every day". You are off by a scale that cannot be attributed to anything other than stupidity or malice. It's reasonable to disagree about what the best immigration policies should be (I suspect that I have several disagreements with Kevin and Bill, for example) but you really should try to be at least minimally informed, honest, and plausible in your remarks or else shut up.

Ok, Matt, I concede that I'm way off base on the numbers, but even ten per day are too much, ten persons who would be alive today if we had control enough of our border to prevent violent criminals from entering our country. While these immigration lawyers lament the loss of one unfortunate boy, many more who die as the result of the lack of the enforcement of our immigration laws are ignored by them. In effect, these immigration lawyers are saying that we should sacrifice the lives of our citizens for the greater benefit of foreigners. They play on our generosity and use distorted statistics to spin their manifestly illogical assertions of how 12 million poor and illiterate are a net benefit to our country and how they would never prevail upon our welfare system to support their typically large families or use our health care factilities without payment. They are transnationalists, who, like communists naively view the world as one. They believe that our injured citizens are just so much collateral damage to accomplishing their agenda, and that our country is not ours, but belongs to everyone who wishes to enter and that we citizens should have almost no say in our future. Most Americans vigorously disagree with their positions. This is why they've failed time after time, after they've attempted to force their will on the American people. The true axis of evil are illegal alien advocates, the Chamber of Commerce and unscrupulous politicians like Diane Feinstein, Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy who would pander to ethnocentrists interests before that of our general population as a whole. They will never succeed.
