Rudy Giuliani, National Security, and the Grand Old Party on Immigration and Border Enforcement

We can expect lots of talk of the need for greater immigration enforcement through 2008 and efforts to play on fears of terrorism fears at every turn (even though there is no evidence that undocumented immigrants from Mexico, the largest group of undocumented immigrants in the United States, pose a substantial terrorism risk).  The car bomb scare in London and the attack Saturday at the Glasgow airport underscore the need for a strong immigration policy in the United States, Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Saturday as he continues his run for the Presidency by resting on his 9/11 laurels (here).   This weekend (here), the GOP presidential candidates stumping in Iowa (John McCain, as well as Rudy Giuliani, wase not there) cheered the death of the Senate immigration reform bill and called for greater immigration enforcement measures. Law & Order star and former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson has played similar tunes on the National Review Online (here) and You Tube (here).

Expect more of this kind of political talk in the coming days and months. Someday perhaps, the nation will return to efforts to really reform the immigration laws and make them work for responsibly, reasonably, efficiently, and fairly for all.
