Immigrant of the Day: Satendar Singh
Satendar Singh, a 26-year-old immigrant from Fiji, recently died after being punched at Lake Natoma near Sacramento on July 1. Singh was picnicking with friends of Fijian and Indian descent.
According to friends of Singh's who were there, a group of Russian-speaking men and women hassled them throughout the day. That evening, about six men from the group picked a fight, Singh's friends said. Singh was struck once, fell and hit his head. No one else was injured.
Hundreds of supporters (here) met on Sunday at the West Coast Diversity Summit in Sacramento in hopes of bringing grass-roots groups together against the hate they blame in the death of the young Fijian immigrant. California State Senator Darrell Steinberg (here) penned a nice op/ed on the community response to the sad death.

Thank God it was immigrant on immigrant, as the citizen would once more be abused by the immigration lawyer community as lazy riff-raff (jobs Americans won't do) who should be superceded on this planet by first generation immigrants. It looks like there are a few Russians trying to destroy the advocate's premise that naturalizing more citizens would reduce the crime rate.

More nonsensical blather from our resident bigot. In the Sacto area there are a number of Slavic communities. The oldest one is arguably the Serbian community which is notable for the retention of language in even 4th generation Americans and also for the rowdy homophobia (the reason for the viscious attack) of some of the younger generation. The first Serb Church in America is situated just outside of Sacramento. It could have been Ukranians or perhaps actual Russians, but it is not clear at all that there was anything immigrant v immigrant about this tragedy. Get your mind out of the gutter Horace.
