Immigration Attorney: ICE Agents Increasing Enforcement in North County (San Diego)

Lilia Velasquez, a San Diego immigration attorney and immigration professor at California Western, says in the last 10 days, she's received twice as many calls as normal. She says many Latino residents in North County are terrified because Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have detained their relatives and neighbors. According to the radio interview (here) by KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson, Lilia Velazquez says the stories callers are telling her are nearly identical. Velazquez:

The immigration officer had gone to their homes looking for someone else. They didn't find that someone else. So they arrested the husband or the relative instead. And they were very worried as to whether there was a special operation taking place or why was ICE staking out those places.

Velazquez says callers tell her agents often detain everyone at the house who can't show immigration papers.

I feel no pity for any of them. A great number of these people were originally illegal aliens and subsequently obtained amnesty, and many of those lied to obtain that amnesty. Now they're protecting their illegal alien friends and relatives who followed them, and boo hoo, they're got caught up in their own web. Frankly, if we had the resources, I'd like to see the government go back over the 1986 amnesties and naturalizations and prosecute those who presented forged documents and have them deported for committing fraud. Beyond the Mexifornia border, Chicago and a few other places, most citizens well aware of the illegitimate nature of the naturalization of millions of Mexican and Latin Americans. What happened then still smarts and will never be forgotten. Hence the hostility and lack of respect for the marchers today.
