An Immigrants' Civil Rights Movement?

It is too early to say but we may be seeing the emergence of a civil rights movement for immigrants in the United States.  In recent weeks, the nation has seen mass protests against restrictionist immigration reform proposals in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Sacramento, and many other cities.  Proposed reform legislation pending in Congress that would criminalize the status of being an undocumented immigrant and any persons who assist them, has galvanized this new activism.  Will it last?  Only time will tell.  However, given that the Los Angeles demonstration numbered 500,000 people -- larger than the largest Vietnam war protest in the 1960s, it seems unlikely that immigrants and those willing to fight for their rights, will go away soon.
