Animal Care Webnar still open
Time is running out!
Register Now for PRIM&R's February webinar:
Top Tips for 2008: What Every IACUC Should Know
February 7, 1:00 - 2:30 PM ET.
Registration closes on Tuesday, February 5 at 5:00 PM ET.
|
 |
|
 |
 |
Overview
There is little concrete guidance available to animal care and use programs on how to effectively manage post-approval monitoring, designated member review, and non-compliance.
To complicate matters, many IACUC professionals do not know or
understand the various elements of each of these important functions.
Moreover, these activities raise a myriad of subtle, yet complex,
issues for implementation, and often create confusion, anxiety, and,
occasionally, citations for IACUCs.
During this educational offering, participants will
learn about best practices and how to develop optimal policies and
procedures in order to avoid these problems and improve the function of
the IACUC. This webinar will be led by our highly respected faculty (affectionately known as the “4 M’s”), Molly Greene, Marky Pitts, Mary Lou James, and Monte Matthews.
Who Should Participate?
The anticipated audience for this webinar
includes all those engaged in or with the IACUC and the work of animal
research in general. IACUC chairs, administrators, staff, and members,
institutional officials/signatory officials, and industry
representatives will find this webinar beneficial.
Individual or group registration rates are available.

Toyota International Teacher
Program Celebrates 10 Years of Connecting U.S. Classrooms to the World
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc. continues to move America's classrooms
forward with the Toyota International Teacher Program. Administered by IIE,
this international professional development opportunity began 10 years ago
with a study tour for 50 teachers to Japan, expanded to include Costa Rica
and the Galapagos Islands in 2007. As a result, nearly 500 teachers have had
the opportunity to immerse themselves in locations around the globe.
"Studying nature and its conservation first hand and in a setting beyond our
borders will teach key lessons about globalization and the world we share,"
said IIE President and CEO Dr. Allan E. Goodman.
To be eligible for the Toyota International Teacher Program, teachers must
be a U.S. citizen, employed full-time as a secondary classroom teacher or
teacher-librarian (grades 6-12) and have a minimum of three years teaching
experience. Teacher-librarians are now also invited to apply, as they are
full participants on school instructional teams, collaborating with other
teachers and administrators.
For application information, please visit www.iie.org/toyota.

Scholar Rescue Fund:
Scholars Seeking Academic Positions
The world is not a safer place for scholars in 2008. Persecution,
imprisonment, violence and censorship continue to create seemingly
insurmountable circumstances for many scholars from over 100 countries
around the globe. Fortunately, the Scholar Rescue Fund exists to provide
relief to many of the world's most accomplished academic leaders. We wish to
thank all of our university and institutional partners for your enthusiastic
support in hosting many of these deserving scholars over the last year.
The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF)
provides fellowships for established scholars whose lives and work are
threatened in their home countries. These fellowships permit professors,
researchers and other senior academics to find temporary refuge at
universities and colleges anywhere in the world, enabling them to pursue
their academic work and to continue to share their knowledge with students,
colleagues, and the community at large. When conditions improve, these
scholars will return home to help rebuild universities and societies ravaged
by fear, conflict and repression. During the fellowship, conditions in a
scholar's home country may improve, permitting safe return; if safe return
is not possible, the scholar may use the fellowship period to identify a
longer-term opportunity.
Host a Scholar on Your Campus
We kindly ask you to consider hosting a scholar on your campus. If you are
interested in hosting one of these scholars or for more information, please
contact:

Conferences in International
Education
Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) European Policy Seminar
"International rankings and indicators. What they tell us and what they
don't."
Brussels, Belgium
April 4, 2008
Rankings are all the craze these days. They are the object of heated
controversies. Their methodologies, if not their raison d'être, are
challenged by many. Those who come out on top love them – until they drop
down the table. This ACA European Policy Seminar provides an introduction
and a constructive critique of international rankings and league tables. It
will introduce and explain the major methodologies in use today, such as
those of the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) and of Shanghai Jiao
Tong University. Likewise, it will also introduce new approaches, such as
the discipline-specific rankings of the German Centre for Higher Education
Development (CHE). The OECD will present its feasibility study for what some
call already a 'PISA for Higher Education'.

IIEPassport 2008 Study Abroad
Directories Now Available
The Institute of International Education (IIE) has just published the 2008
editions of the IIEPassport Study Abroad Directories. IIEPassport: Academic
Year Abroad and IIEPassport: Short-Term Study Abroad, a joint project
between IIE and EducationDynamics, are the most comprehensive resource,
listing detailed information on more than 7,500 study abroad programs
worldwide. With over 700 new listings, these books include more study abroad
opportunities than ever before. The directories are available for purchase
at www.iiebooks.org.
More than 700 new program listings appear in this year's IIEPassport Study
Abroad print directories. The total number of listings in the directories is
7798. Below are some statistics that show the impressive growth in study
abroad programs being offered to students.
IIEPassport 2008 Quick Facts:- Since 2001, over 2800 listings were added, an increase of 59%.
- In 2008, more than 702 programs were added, an increase of 10% over
2007.
- Of these 700 programs, approximately 200 were submitted by 60 new
program sponsors (10 more institutions than last year), a large percentage
of these coming from non-US institutions offering direct enrollment.
- There is an increase in community/volunteer service, internship and
teach/travel programs. This is most indicative by the increased number of
short-term programs in Africa and Asia, with each region showing a growth of
19% and 21% over 2007.
- Study abroad programs in the Middle East and North Africa are growing
steadily each year, with 2008 showing a 10% increase in academic year
programs and a leap of 30% in short-term study programs. Egypt, Jordan,
Israel, Turkey and Morocco continue to be popular destinations, and,
although Arabic language and culture studies are prevalent, virtually all
areas of study may be pursued.
Order Information:
The 2008 editions are now available for purchase. For ordering information,
please visit: www.iiebooks.org/edab.html. Complimentary copies of the
two books will be mailed to the study abroad designee at all IIENetwork
member institutions in the next two weeks. If you are a standing order
subscriber, your discounted copy of the books will be sent to you
automatically.
Promote Your Program and Include a Free Listing:
Listing your programs in the IIEPassport Study Abroad Directories is free
service to all US and non-US institutions that offer study abroad
opportunities for US students. Each listing contains detailed information
including sponsor institution, program dates and deadlines, fields of study,
special study options, costs, housing arrangements, and contact information.
To add a free listing, please email our editor, Marie O'Sullivan, at editor@iiepassport.org for
assistance.

Call for Papers - Qualitative Research in Financial Markets
Edited by: Dr Bruce Burton, School of Accounting & Finance, University of Dundee, UK
We are currently seeking papers for an exciting new journal, to be
launched by Emerald in 2009. Qualitative Research in Financial Markets
provides an international, peer-reviewed forum to explore the
burgeoning research activity in finance that uses qualitative methods.
Building on a long pedigree of finance research, the journal will
publish innovative analyses and novel insights that explore the
operations of financial markets worldwide. In addition to peer-reviewed
articles, the journal publishes in-depth case studies with real
relevance to practice, along with extended book reviews. The Editor
also explicitly encourages submission of methodological studies
regarding the use of qualitative methods in finance research.
Coverage is international, and empirical studies making use of
interview, case study and survey methods to investigate the following
(non-exhaustive) list of topics are welcomed:
- Inconsistency in managerial and investor perceptions of market pricing mechanisms;
- Evidence and opinions on bubbles, herding and speculative behaviour;
- Managerial and investor views regarding stock market overreaction;
- Investors' portfolio choices, including the incorporation of risk;
- Managerial decision-making frameworks, including attitudes to risk;
- The role of market timing in relation to major corporate news releases;
- Principal-agent relationships in the modern global financial environment;
- Responses to changes in corporate governance regulations and structures;
- Over-commitment to real and financial investments;
- Practitioner perspectives on external financing decisions;
- Corporate communication and the transmission of price-sensitive information;
- Divergence between theory and practice in the use of derivatives;
- The implications of the recent trend for private equity and off-market financing;
- The effect of the sub-prime lending crisis on financial market structure and regulation.
Each paper is reviewed by the editor and, if it is judged suitable
for this publication, it is then sent to two referees for double blind
peer review. Based on their recommendations, the editor then decides
whether the paper should be accepted as it is, revised or rejected.
Submissions should be sent by email to the Editor:
Dr Bruce Burton,
School of Accounting & Finance,
University of Dundee,
Dundee, UK.
