South Carolina legislation Considers Alowing Guns on Campuses

In response to the Virginia Tech shootings, some legislators in South Carolina have proposed legislation allowing persons with concealed weapons permits to carry guns on public school campuses -- from elementary schools to universities.  The bill was introduced in the S.C. House and will be considered by the House Judiciary Committee.  The bill is not expected to be passed by the Legislature before its adjournment on June 7th.  College law enforcement officials in South Carolina do not support the legislation, which they say would make it more difficult to identify  criminals.

At present, only Utah has a law allowing concealed weapons on campuses;  37 states have bans against weapons at schools, and 16 of them specifically prohibit weapons on college campuses.
