21.7 million pounds of beef recalled

Check your freezer.  Topps Meat Co. is recalling 21.7 million pounds of ground beef because of possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7.  The recall is the second largest meat recall ever. Illnesses have been reported in at least eight states.

The frozen ground beef products were produced on various dates between Sept. 25, 2006, and Sept. 25, 2007, and were distributed to food service institutions in the New York metropolitan area and to retail establishments nationwide.

Marlerblog has a good summary of recent meat recalls, calling this latest "a huge example of an increasing problem with ground meat in the USA."
