CA Legislation Vetoed

From the Sacramento Bee:

Legislation to allow California children to have more than two parents was vetoed today by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The bill would have given judges authority to recognize multiple parents if doing so is "required in the best interest of the child."

On separate legislation watched closely by the gay and lesbian community, however, Brown signed Senate Bill 1172 to prohibit children under 18 from undergoing psychotherapy to change their sexual orientation.

And gay marriage has provoked widespread conversation about the institution’s meaning and place.

Parenting Roles

From the Cut:

I love my straight female friends, but watching them divvy up parenting responsibilities with their baby daddies drives me bonkers. These are women who attended fiercely all-girls’ schools, watched Buffy, and serve on women-in-the-workplace committees. They married groovy guys with hip glasses and evolved into counterparts of smart, savvy couples. But then something went awry: They slipped into sexist models of parenting. As a queer woman in a two-mom family, it kills me to see my lady friends doing far more than their share of the work.

Alabama Federal Ct Opinion on Marriage License Policy

The US District Court for the Middle District of Alabama released an opinion in a case brought by people challenging Defendant Probate Judge Reese McKinney’s marriage license policy, which, it was argued, required applicants to present proof of legal residence in the US and a valid Social Security card in order to receive a marriage license.  Read the opinion here.
