Indian events raises awareness of elder rights issues on International Day of Older Persons

>KANPUR: Several events were organized in the city to mark International Day of Older Persons on Tuesday.

The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 every year. The day is celebrated by raising awareness about the issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that elders make to society.

Authorities of Swaraj Vridhashram along with Sahyog NGO felicitated the elderly persons living in Swaraj Ashram, an old age home in Panki on Tuesday. The members of the NGO also spent some time with the elder persons and shared their experiences. Manju Bhatia, the owner of Swaraj Ashram said old persons need a bit of attention and care.

"People often complain that they do not have time to look after their parents because of their busy work life. But if one can manage time for kids and parties then it is also possible to take out some time for parents," added Manju.

In an another event organised by Gayatri Shaktipeeth, the organisers and elderly people collectively discussed ways to maintain their dignity even in old age. In a community event organised at H-2 block, Kidwai Nagar, the elder persons interacted with each other and shared their feelings to mark the Elders' Day.

"Earlier, people used to live with their children in old age but society is no longer parent-oriented and now the elders are moving out of their homes to places that cater to their needs," said Manoj Shukla, from Gayatri Shaktipeeth.
