Report of US lawyers' mission to China

The Association of the Bar of the City of New York has recently issued a report of a visit its delegation made to Beijing and Shanghai in December, 2009. The report is available here. Nothing earthshaking, but it has a useful summary of relationship of China's legal profession to the state (and the Party) as well as an appendix with case histories of particular lawyers who have recently run into problems. The report mentions that the delegation raised the issue of lawyers losing their licenses for representing disfavored clients, but doesn't say what, if anything, the response of their interlocutors from the Beijing and Shanghai Lawyers Associations was.
