Job openings at the CECC

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China has three openings, two of which are for analysts: candidates who have a background or strong interest in (a) criminal procedure, courts, police, and prisons, or (b) labor issues and civil society. It's also seeking a press secretary/external relations coordinator. The full announcements are below. Please note two things:

  • The deadline is December 15, 2009.
  • I am told unofficially that the analysts (i.e., the professional staff members advertised for below) who are happiest and most successful at the CECC tend to be studious researchers interested in academic work, as opposed to those who may want to use the CECC as a launching pad to other work on the Hill or in the Administration. I know of two professional staff members who subsequently moved into regular tenure-track positions in the Chinese law field.

Professional Staff Members

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China is seeking a professional staff member to conduct research and complete writing assignments, including short analyses, topic papers, and annual report sections on topics within the Commission's mandate.  In addition, the staff member will assist with researching individual political prisoner cases and updating and maintaining case records in the CECC Political Prisoner Database. The staff member will be called upon to coordinate CECC hearings and issue roundtables, and attend events relevant to CECC issues that other U.S. Government and private sector organizations hold in Washington, DC and elsewhere. The staff member may be asked to travel to U.S. cities, China, or other foreign locations, on official business. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen. Candidates will preferably have a law degree or a Ph.D. or M.A. in political science, history, business, economics, or other social sciences, however, B.A. candidates with very strong credentials will also receive serious consideration. In particular, the Commission seeks candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: China's legislative, judicial, or law enforcement institutions; criminal procedure, courts, police, and prisons; or labor issues and civil society. Very strong demonstrated ability to speak, read, write, and perform research in Chinese (Mandarin) is required. The successful candidate will likely have lived or studied in China. Other special skills such as Internet design, database design, quantitative analysis, etc., though not required, may be highly desirable, and the applicant should note them in their cover letter. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, exceptional written and oral communications skills in English, and the ability, energy, and enthusiasm to work under tight deadlines and as part of a team. Salaries are commensurate with experience to start. Press Secretary and External Relations Coordinator

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China is seeking a Press Secretary and External Relations Coordinator who will be charged with developing and executing a multifaceted media and external relations strategy. This will include drafting press releases and speeches, developing and maintaining the Commission’s database of media and professional contacts, and managing contacts using leading edge software tools. The staff member will be called upon to help organize CECC meetings, hearings, and issue roundtables, and attend events relevant to CECC issues that other U.S. government and private sector organizations hold in Washington, DC and elsewhere. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen. Candidates will preferably have an M.A. in journalism, political science, or other social sciences, however B.A. candidates with very strong credentials will also receive serious consideration. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer and editor, with experience in multiple formats, including press releases and speeches. Candidate must have familiarity with new media strategies, and have Capitol Hill experience or experience with an agency, trade association, media outlet or public relations firm. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability, energy, and enthusiasm to work under tight deadlines and as part of a team. China-related experience is not required, but a plus and should be highlighted in your application. Other special skills such as Internet design, database design, quantitative analysis, etc., though not required, may be highly desirable, and the applicant should note them in their cover letter.
