Abovethelaw reports that just under 1000 big firm attornys and staffers were laid off last Wednesday and Thursday alone.
For law students, in addition to reduced and even cancelled summer programs, there are many reports of firms revoking current third year law student's offers as well. In my opinion, this is the sleaziest type of layoff becuase the third year has already forgone other opportunities with other firms and at this late date, there is no way they will find another big law job. The firms owe these students at least one years work, unless perphaps it would absolutely force them into dissolution (which I doubt, there are plenty other places to cut and layoff). This type of move will hurt a firm's reputations for a long time, as these stories travel, especially around the law students. When the economy picks up, see how many third years will be interested in that firm over others after such a move.
