American, US Airways Offer Concessions to European Regulators

The European Commission  will make a final decision regarding approval of the proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways in early August after taking extra time to consider the set of remedies put forth by the carriers this week. The specific concessions offered have not been made public. The EC is not expected to block the merger, given the carriers' lack of dominance at any one EU airport or within the transatlantic market.

Bench Trial in World Trade Center Case Begins Today

The bench trial in the case of World Trade Center Properties, L.L.C. et al v. United Airlines, Inc. et al  is expected to begin today and conclude on Wednesday. This nonjury trial is to determine whether the owners of the World Trade Center property damaged in the 9/11 attacks can recover for damages caused by airline negligence despite having already collected insurance proceeds for the loss. Should U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein rule against the airlines, then a separate trial would be necessary to determine liability.
