The long-discussed merger between American Airlines and US Airways appears on the verge of finally becoming a reality with both boards expected to vote on the merger Monday. The combined carrier would become the largest in the world by passenger traffic. American is currently the third largest in the United States and US Airways is fifth. It is expected that the post-merger airline will remain in American's current alliance, oneworld, severing ties with US Airways' Star Alliance partners. We will try to post an early look at the potential antitrust implications next week once the deal is actually final. For now, the Wall Street Journal offers a concise analysis of the merger's market impacts.
