Why There Can Never Be True Peace In the Middle East Unless The Hamas Terrorists Are Killed
The tragic events that are unfolding in Israel provides an opportunity for me to share my personal experiences and why I believe that there never will be true peace in the Middle East-at least not in my lifetime or my childrens-unless the Hamas Terrorists are killed.
The year was 1993 and this was my first trip to Israel. The country was relatively calm-meaning there was no war going on. I was staying at the Hyatt in Jerusalem which is very close to the West Bank. I decided to go for a run. I was maybe a mile away from my hotel and I was wearing shorts and no shirt as it must have been close to a hundred degrees.
All of a sudden a large group of young children started running behind me and started to throw rocks at me. These kids must have been about 5, maybe 6 years old. As I was running for my life I also saw a large number of Arab women shouting out there windows and cheering "get him." I could not understand what they were saying, but I knew what they were saying.
Those 5 year olds are now young men and women. Many of these children probably now live in Gaza-which by the way, is part of Israel and has never been a separate State. Hatred in Israel (which includes Gaza and the West Bank)is real. There really are two separate societies. Children are taught to hate. Suicide bombers are considered hero's. In 1993, an American Jew could not go to Gaza or the West Bank without putting there lives in danger, yet Arabs were free to work and live in Israel.
The problem is that the Arabs, yes the Arabs, institutionalize and cherish this hate of the Jewish people and of Israel. And there you have it. The circle continues from year to year. Unfortunately, the only way to solve this problem is to kill those who seek to kill you. Hamas has made no secret of their goal-to drive the Jews into the sea so they can have an Islamic State. It is only after Israel takes this bold move, can a true peace be established.
In 1993, I sent a letter to the editor of the New York Times where I described this experience and they did not publish it. Now that I have a way of publishing it, I have decided to take the opportunity to do so.
Hopefully, someone will read it and find it useful.

I read your blog on a daily basis for the insightful commentary and thoughts of you and your co-bloggers on employment and labor issues. Thanks sharing your view regarding Hamas and the necessary predicate for peace. As a native born American I cannot imagine what it is like to yearn for peace when other parties pray for your destruction and teach their children to hate. Israel and its people must be applauded for their persistent effort to extend the hand of peace to their neighbors in spite of the effort to not only slap it away, but to lop it off. Hopefully, one day, the Middle East will be reformed such that Israelis can live in peace.

re. "the only way to solve this problem is to kill those who seek to kill you": I find this statement disturbing. You can kill people, but you do not kill what some people will inevitably see as a greater cause for which they will be ready to die. In fact, you fuel hatred by killing, thereby only making Hamas more popular in the Arab world. I am neither Jewish, nor Arab, but I find your statement utterly disappointing.

I stand by it, but thank you for commenting.

i agree an eye for an eye is the mentality shared by BOTH Palestinians and Jews and that mentality will lead to never ending death, destruction, and suffering. "an eye for an eye as the golden rule leaves the world full of blind men" killing those who seek to kill you is the mentality the george bush administration took in going into afghanistan and iraq and look at the death and destruction it has caused. violence begets violence!!!!!!! for every palestinian killed spawns 3 future terrorists who will have even greater hatred, the cycle will never end until one side stands up and says ENOUGH of the violence!

I do not agree that Israel has any type of eye for an eye goal. In fact, Israel is trying to spare as much human life as possible. It is just not acceptable to be under Rocket attack. Though I agree that the cycle of hate may continue, it is the fault of HAMAS. Once they denounce terrorism and stop their Rockets, I am sure that Israel will stop the war.
