UNLV Director of Academic Support Position

DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT

            The William S. Boyd School of Law of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applicants interested in joining our faculty as an Assistant Professor in Residence – Academic Support.   The qualifications for the Director of Academic Support position include a record of academic success in law school and experience suggesting the aptitude to direct a creative and ambitious academic support program.  The faculty also expects that the Academic Support Director will be a resource for the faculty to increase teaching effectiveness.   The existing program is administered by the Director, with the assistance of an Associate Director, and includes workshops, tutoring, special classes, orientation programs, bar preparation classes, counseling, and other strategies to enhance the learning environment at our law school.  The Director may teach substantive, non-bar, non-ASP related classes.  The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, renewable contract position.

            The Boyd School of Law, a state-supported law school, is the only law school in Nevada.  Located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in a desert mountain setting and one of the fastest growing cities in the country, the law school commenced classes in August 1998, has a faculty of 42 new and experienced legal educators drawn from law schools around the country, and is located in a state-of-the-art facility in the center of the University campus.  The School with nearly 500 students offers a full-time day program, a part-time day program, and an evening program.

Academic Success Postion at McGeorge School of Law

The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California has an opening for the Director of Academic Success.  Please see official notice below.

Basic Function:

The Director of Academic Success is both a gifted teacher and an administrator responsible for managing, coordinating, and implementing the law school's Academic Success Program. The program helps students attain the analytical and writing skills essential to their success in law school, on bar exams and in their use of their legal education thereafter. It serves both beginning students and those with identified academic needs based on classroom or bar exam performance. The Director teaches a fundamentals course in the Spring to underperforming first-year students.  In addition, the Director designs and conducts workshops on skills-related topics, works one-on-one with students, supervises and trains student assistants, and enlists faculty participation as needed.  This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, renewable contract position.

Minimum Qualifications:

*Excellent academic credentials

*Experience in the practice of law

*Exceptional communication and organizational skills

*Strong interest in working with students

*Teaching ability, particularly an ability to identify and communicate the skills required for effective legal analysis and exam performance

Florida Coastal School of Law invites nominations and applications for two (2) Academic Success Counselor positions. 

Responsibilities:  Work with students to improve academic performance and advise students on other academic issues such as scheduling or social influences;  Assist in developing lesson plans and present weekly sessions in the required first semester program, Pathways to Academic Success Seminar (P.A.S.S.);  Assist students in reviewing answers to practice exams (including bar exam essays) and provide advice regarding exam strategy;  Assist in preparing and presenting second-semester and upper level workshops;  Track the academic progress of “at risk” students and students on academic probation;  Assist in planning and executing New Student Orientation;  Other duties, as assigned.

Phoenix School of Law is a member of The InfiLaw System, a consortium of independent law schools committed to making legal education more responsive to the realities of new career dynamics. The University of Iowa College of Law seeks applications for a full-time Director of Academic Support beginning with the 2008-09 academic year.

The College of Law is an intimate, collegial and dynamic professional community located in an affordable university town with vibrant range of academic and cultural endeavors.  The Director of Academic Support will administer and advance the current Academic Achievement Program which principally supports first-year-law students as they develop legal reading, study and test-taking skills.

The Director will work with law school faculty and administrative staff to create and present first-year orientation and related programming, and coordinate a year-long peer mentoring program.  As part of the Student Services team, the Director will also contribute to the design and implementation of programming to enhance the professional development of second- and third-year students as they make curricular choices, sharpen their academic skills and prepare to take a bar examination.  The Director may assume other duties related to law Student Services, such as participation in the Hubbard Law School Preparation Program and work with students for whom English is a second language.  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required qualifications and experience:

  1. A juris doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school; an equivalent combination of education and experience is required;
  2. Admission to a state bar;
  3. Ability to create and present programs to address challenges of law school;
  4. Considerable (3-5) years experience in program management is required;
  5. Demonstrated ability to counsel, advise and instruct people from diverse backgrounds;
  6. Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff and students to enhance effectiveness of the Academic Achievement Program; and

The Columbus School of Law of The Catholic University of America invites applications for the position of Director of Academic Support.  The new Director will begin in August 2008.

The goal of the Academic Excellence Program is to enhance the academic success of all CUA law students while providing specialized and targeted assistance to those students experiencing the most academic difficulty.  The Director of the Academic Excellence Program will coordinate a teaching and learning support program with particular emphasis on 1) providing individualized assistance and programming for students who are underperforming in law school; 2) training and assisting tutors/teaching assistants working with students in first year and upper division courses; 3) collaborating with the staff of the Academic Affairs Office in developing programs or courses geared to assist with bar preparation; and 4) working with faculty to assist them in teaching different types of learners.  The Director will collaborate with other law school personnel concerned with student academic and bar success including doctrinal law faculty, legal writing faculty, clinical faculty, student services professionals and academic administrators.

This Lecturer, Academic Support position is a one year appointment with the possibility of continuing for an additional 2 years (12 months per year).

The following information is from an e-mail that was recently sent to the ASP listserv.  Please excuse any spacing problems.  Typepad is not a happy camper this morning!

Regent is seeking to hire in a tenure-track faculty position an Associate Director of Academic Success.

The person would also have faculty rank as either an Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on experience, publication record, and other factors in his or her background.  The person would assist me in running the program by meeting with students in one-on- one advising sessions and by helping direct our Summer Academic Success Program and our Study Skills Workshops.  (Please see our website at http://www.regent.edu/acad/schlaw/academicsuccess/home.cfm

for general information about our program.)  In addition to assisting me in our Academic Success Program, this person would teach one doctrinal course per semester.  The specific course taught would depend on the person's interests and experience and on our curricular needs.

 

I am excited about this new position and believe it will provide a great opportunity for someone with a strong desire to work in the academic support field to obtain tenure-track (and hopefully ultimately tenured) status.  The position will also enable someone to combine his or her love of academic support with his or her desire to teach a doctrinal course each semester.  The position will begin in the 2008-09 academic year, and the compensation level will reflect the tenure-track rank of the position.

New England School of Law, in Boston, Massachusetts, is expanding its Academic Support Program and seeks to appoint an Assistant/ Associate Director with the rank of Academic Support Professor. New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts is expanding its Academic Support Program and seeks to appoint an Assistant/ Associate Director with the rank of Academic Support Professor.  The successful candidate will assist in all aspects of the Academic Support Program, helping students to hone their legal skills to enhance their performance in law school, the Bar Exam, and in practice.

The Assistant/ Associate Director will teach in the Program’s first-year “Academic Excellence” class, which focuses upon developing law school skills, enriching analytical abilities, and creating a supportive learning environment.  The Assistant/ Associate Director will also teach in NESL’s innovative “Legal Analysis” class, developed to benefit underperforming second-year students.  This class is coupled with a mandatory doctrinal course and provides students with extensive opportunities to practice the skills needed for success on exams.  Finally, the Assistant/ Associate Director will also counsel students on study skills, analysis, time-management, bar preparation, and balance.

The Academic Support Program enjoys strong support from the law school’s students, faculty, and administration.  The Program seeks candidates interested in contributing to the development of a program committed to enhancing students’ law school experience.  Candidates must possess a J.D., a strong academic record, solid legal writing skills, and experience demonstrating interest and potential in academic support.  Prior successful teaching experience, particularly in academic support or a related field, is particularly desirable.  Practice experience is also advantageous.

Hofstra University School of Law is looking for a new Associate Director of Academic Support Programs.  Below is the job announcement.

Associate Director of Academic Support Programs

The Academic Support Program Associate Director will assist in all aspects of Hofstra Law School’s Academic Support Program, which is designed to help students develop the academic skills necessary for success in law school, on the bar exam, and in practice.

The Associate Director will teach first and second – year skills classes work with students in individual and small group sessions, and conduct skills workshops. The Associate Director will also help identify and assist students who need additional academic support, and will help design and implement programs. The Associate Director will assist with the law school bar exam preparation programs, which will provide bar exam information to students, organize bar – exam related events, and conduct bar-exam programs and classes. This is a daytime weekday position, but some evening and weekend work will be required.

Applicants must have a J.D., a strong academic record, and experience that demonstrate a potential for excellence in academic support. Experience in law school academic support program, or other relevant teaching experience, is strongly preferred. Academic Support/Legal Writing Position

American University’s Washington College of Law seeks applications for a full-time Academic Support and Legal Writing Position for Academic Year 2008-2009. The position will report to the Director of the Legal Rhetoric Program. Details on requirements are below.

(1) Required qualifications and experience include:

J.D. degree or equivalent; demonstrated excellence and experience in running an Academic Support program in a law school; demonstrated excellence in legal writing and research teaching; strong teamwork; interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; administrative skills and experience.

(2) Preferred qualifications and experience include:

Legal practice, clerkship, or other law-related work experience; law school teaching experience; familiarity with recent scholarship in Academic Support and legal research and writing; participation in national Academic Support and Legal Writing organizations; familiarity with computer or web-based instructional technology; experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment.

(3) Core responsibilities and duties include:

Approximately one-half of time will be spent developing, administering, and teaching in an Academic Support Program for law students that will serve incoming first year students, as well as students during the first year of law school, and in developing an academic support system to serve second and third year students. The position will work with the Diversity Office and the Dean of Students Office, as well as the Legal Rhetoric Program, in serving students. One-half time will be spent teaching legal research and writing in the two-credit, two-semester Legal Rhetoric Program to approximately 24 students each semester; this teaching includes conferences with students, assessing students work, giving detailed feedback on student work, and working with the Legal Rhetoric Program in developing materials and administering the Program.

(4) Salary and contract:

Salary will be approximately $70, 000 for a 12-month contract. The position will receive two one-year contracts, after which she or he will be eligible for a 3-year contract, followed by a 5-year contract.

Associate Director of the Irene Diamond Professional Skills Center

The Associate Director will assist the Director in designing and implementing all aspects of the Academic Support Program, which currently includes working with first- and second-year students as they develop the academic, study, and time-management skills necessary for success in the Law School’s program of study.  The Skills Center also designs and administers the Summer Law Institute (a three-week intensive introduction to law study) and the Pre-Law Program (a mandatory orientation program for all entering students). The Associate Director will participate in those programs and may design and teach first- or second-year skills sessions and academic support sections of required doctrinal courses; work with students individually or in small groups; and train and supervise teaching assistants. In keeping with CUNY’s integrated approach to academic support, the Associate Director will also be involved in developing faculty workshops on pedagogy and serve as a resource to faculty in the areas of skills-based teaching and testing.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A JD degree and 3+ years of experience are required. The successful candidate must be committed to the public interest mission of the Law School and the role of academic support in law shool.  She or he should possess excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
